LISTEN TO THIS WEEK'S AUDIO SERMON Trinity Sunday Sunday, June 7, 2009 John 3: 1-17 Trinity Sunday You might remember that last week we
marked a very special day on the church calendar. Do you remember what
Pentecost was all about? That's right: Pentecost is the day each year
that we mark the coming of the Holy Spirit.
This week we observe another special day. We call it Trinity Sunday. Is that a word you know? (Trinity?) I'll give you a hint - it starts the same way as some others - like tricycle and triangle. How many wheels does a tricycle have? And how many sides does a triangle have? That's right! Three. And when you hear the word trinity you know that someone is talking about a special group of three. And when you hear that word at church, you should know that we're talking about a very special Trinity: God the Father, Jesus his Son and the Holy Spirit. So when we mention this Trinity we're talking about the three forms in which we know God. We know God as our Father in Heaven - and we know God in his human form as Jesus - and we know the Holy Spirit, which surrounds us and fills us all. Each of the three represents God - just in a different way. That might be a hard thing to think about at first (knowing one thing in three different forms), but if you think about it, it's not unlike the three different ways we know water. What happens to water when it gets very cold? That's right - it turns to ice. And when it becomes very hot it becomes steam. Water, steam and ice...three different forms of the very same thing. Pretty neat how that works, don't you think? So this week we give thanks for God in each of his three forms. Let's name them together: The Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Shall we pray? Dear God, You have entered our lives in three forms, each important. Watch over us as we celebrate Trinity Sunday and during the week ahead. Amen. |
